I. Types and global distribution characteristics of copper resources
Global copper resources are mainly divided into six types, and their resource reserves account for:
1. Schist type (69.0%): occupies the main position of copper resources in the world
2. Stratified (11.8%): an important source of associated cobalt resources
3. Magmatic sulfide type (5.1%): rich in nickel and platinum group elements
4. Volcanic massive sulfide type (4.9%): the symbiosis of zinc and copper is significant
5. Iron oxide copper-gold type (4.7%): polymetallic composite deposit
6. Sintered rock type (2.2%): medium and small high grade deposits
All types of copper mines show significant regional clustering characteristics:
Granitic copper deposits are mainly distributed in three metallogenic areas:
Pan-Pacific metallogenic area: including the super-large deposits in Chile (Escondida, the largest in the world), Peru (Antamina) and the United States (Morenci)
Tethys-Himalayan metallogenic area: covering Yulong copper mine in China and Reko Diq in Pakistan
Ancient Asian metallogenic areas: including Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia and Aktogai in Kazakhstan
Depository lamellar copper deposits are concentrated in the Central African copper and cobalt metallogenic zone:
Copper belt in Katanga province, Congo (DRC)
The Copper belt province of Zambia
Super large deposits such as Udokan in Russia
Ⅱ. Global copper industry chain pattern
(1) The production end is highly centralized
In 2023, the global copper production will reach 22 million tons, and the major producing countries will be distributed in three tiers:
1. Million-ton level (5 countries): Chile (28 per cent), Peru (12 per cent), China (8 per cent), United States (6 per cent) and Congo (DRC) (5 per cent)
2. 500,000-1 million tons: including Australia, Russia, Zambia and other eight countries
3. Other producing countries: including Poland, Kazakhstan and more than 40 other countries
Top 10 mining companies control nearly half of the capacity:
1. Chilean National Copper Corporation (Codelco)
2. Freeport-McMoran (Freeport-McMoRan)
3. Multinational giants such as BHP Billiton (BHP)
(2) Trade flows show regional differentiation
Copper concentrate trade:
Major exporters: Chile (35% of the world), Peru, Indonesia
Major importers: China (60% of the world), Japan, India
Refined copper trade:
Net exporters: Chile, Zambia, Japan
Net importers: China, Germany, United States
Copper processing trade:
Technology leaders: Germany and Japan maintain net exports
Big consumers: China and the United States rely on imports
Ⅲ. Strategic value of key resources
The transition to new energy is driving demand growth: electric vehicles (83kg of copper per vehicle) and photovoltaic power generation (5 tons of copper per MW) are driving up copper demand
Resource nationalism is on the rise: Chile, Peru and other countries are raising mining taxes, Indonesia is restricting raw ore exports
Supply chain security challenges: 78% of the world’s copper concentrate smelting capacity is concentrated in China
Key associated resources: The Congo (DRC) -Zambia copper belt provides 70% of the world’s cobalt production
Ⅳ. Future development trends
The focus of exploration has shifted to deep prospecting (Chile has developed a mine 1500m deep) and utilization of low-grade resources
Technological innovation: bioleaching technology makes ore of grade 0.3% economically valuable
The recycling system is perfect: recycled copper has accounted for 20% of the global supply
Geopolitical evolution: The African copper and cobalt belt has become the focus of resource competition among major countries
